EXTRA

Region 94 EXTRA

The EXTRA program is designed to provide a more serious and competitive level of play for those players who possess the appropriate interest, skills, and commitment. The EXTRA program maintains AYSO’s core philosophies: everyone on the team plays at least 50 percent of each game; selection to teams is based on open and fair evaluations; and the teams are chosen to create a competitive balance.

Players participating in the EXTRA program will compete against EXTRA teams from other regions. There will be some travel involved, but most EXTRA games will be played within Section 11 (South LA county and Northern Orange County).

SCHEDULE

  • EXTRA teams will not play other Region 94 teams during the Fall season or participate in All Stars.
  • There will be some travel involved, but the games are generally in Orange County.
  • Games are usually on weekends and there may be games on Sundays
  • Season starts at the same time as the Region’s Fall season and usually ends a week after the end of the regular season
  • Many teams also participate in tournaments before and after the season

EXTRA TRYOUTS
Players must try out each year and are open to all 09U-16U Boys & Girls. Players should attend both tryouts. Qualified players should try out even if they are not 100% sure they want to play EXTRA.

SELECTION OF PLAYERS
Teams are selected by a panel of experienced coaches. Tryouts are conducted utilizing the national standard for tryouts.Tryouts are impartial by assigning each player a number and not providing the names of the players until after tryouts have been completed and the players have been selected. All players will be notified if they have made a team or not.

TEAM FORMATION
The region will determine the number of EXTRA teams based upon the number of EXTRA caliber players identified during tryouts and the availability of qualified coaches. We will want to make sure we form a team that is competitive with other EXTRA teams in Orange County. We will not form a team if we do not think it will be competitive or if a qualified coach is not available. Teams will be made of players in a single age brackets. Individual players may be invited to “play up” into the next higher bracket.

FAQ

What is AYSO EXTRA?

For those who want to play harder and still be a part of AYSO, EXTRA is perfect! This program gives AYSO athletes a more progressive soccer experience. With the right balance of competition and inclusion, you can feel secure knowing your child is part of a trusted organization and will be given fair playing time.

How are AYSO EXTRA games organized?

Your Region determines the organization of EXTRA play to suit its needs and numbers, but AYSO’s core philosophies are still in place: everyone on the team plays at least 50 percent of each game; selection to teams is based on open and fair evaluations, and the teams are chosen to create a competitive balance.

Can an Extra player play on a Fall or Spring Core Team?

Unfortunately not.  Extra teams require a higher level of commitment that is difficult to maintain if a player is on multiple teams.

What is the Season Game Schedule Like for Extra?

The game schedule is very similar to that of the regular Fall and Spring seasons with around 10-14 games per season Saturdays.  Playoffs begin in December and can go into February depending on how far the team advances. There are no additional fees as teams advance towards a State Cup championship.

How Does EXTRA Compare to Club?

Both AYSO EXTRA and Club are competitive soccer programs targeting players that have a stronger desire and ability to play the great game of soccer. However, AYSO EXTRA focuses on the development of players in a competitive environment. All players in the AYSO EXTRA program will play at least 1/2 of every game. We believe the game is the best teacher, and no child should have to earn playing time.

Cost for AYSO Extra vs club?

Cost for Region 94 extra will be similar to playing in the fall season but there will be some additional cost for a 2nd uniform and any other team needs. Expected cost for the 2024 Fall/winter season will be between $250-$300. Club cost can be $1000-$3000.
