Question: How do Referee Points work?
Answer: For each game you referee, your team will get ½ point. Each week your team may receive up to 1 point (2 referee games).
Question: Why does your kid’s team need Referee Points?
Answer: Each week a team may earn up to 4 points (Win = 3 points, Tie = 1 point, Loss = 0 points) + 1 Referee Point! There have been many cases of a team NOT making the playoffs because of lack of referee points!
Question: Can kids referee?
Answer: Yes they can! You just have to be 12 years old to be a youth referee. It’s a great way for a kid to learn the game even better! And it counts for community service hours for high school kids!
Coaches! You need to recruit referees for your team! If you need help at your team meeting, call or email me. I’d be happy to come to your meeting and explain to your parents why THEY NEED TO VOLUNTEER to be a referee! Coaches are doing plenty. They shouldn’t have to referee too. (Although many are referees anyway.)
Fact: Half of our players are female. We need female role models and referees!

The usual excuses and answers to them:
- I’m busy.
- Answer: So am I. So are we. So are the coaches. So are the team parents. So are the field coordinators. So are the Snack Shack volunteers, Etc. (Find a way.)
- It’s hard to schedule around my kid’s game.
- Answer: Same for everyone! (Find a way.)
- I don’t know anything about soccer.
- Answer: Neither did I. You don’t have to know anything. That’s why to go to a class and learn!
- Someone else will do it.
- Answer: If everyone thought that way, no one would do it.
- I’m afraid of the older divisions.
- Answer: Then do only the younger divisions until you’re more comfortable.
- I’m not a very good athlete.
- Answer: Then just do the lower division games where it’s pretty easy.
- I can’t do it every week
- Answer: No problem. You sign up only when you are available. If you can’t referee one week, then maybe you can do a game or two the next week. But you have to have taken the class and be a certified referee. And that’s a good reason to have 2-3 certified referees on EVERY TEAM - you can take turns!
- And finally, if you really, really, really, don’t want to do the referee thing, then do SOMETHING ELSE to help. AYSO is an ALL VOLUNTEER organization. There are plenty of opportunities to help out.
